Discount Netbooks – How to Know if a Netbook Fits Your Needs
Netbooks, like the Acer Aspire, are the newest trend in ultra-portable computing. Basically a small laptop, netbooks are more powerful than PDAs, but not as powerful as full size notebooks.
They are called “netbooks” because their primary purpose is surfing the net and sending emails. However, netbooks are also handy if you want to do some work while on the go or need a bare bones laptop at a very low price. (Radio Shack even has an Acer netbook for less than $80, but you have to sign up for an internet data plan.)
Instructions
- First, weigh the pros and cons.
On the positive side, netbooks are small and extremely portable. Also, many netbooks are more energy efficient than other laptops because they are less powerful and have smaller screens. Therefore, they sustain a longer battery life.
Finally, compared to other computers, netbooks are cheap. You can buy an HP or Acer netbook for less than $300. Oh, I almost forgot, netbooks are cute. If you have a fetish for sleek little gadgets, these mini notebooks will make you drool. - Before you run out and buy one, consider the negative aspects of using a netbook.
The smallness that makes them portable and cool also has drawbacks. The screen of a netbook, which is usually no larger than 8 to 10 inches, can take getting used to and may be out of the question for the farsighted. Also, the smaller keyboard may cramp your style if you need to type more than a short email. (Still yet, the fact that netbooks have a keyboard is a plus if you are comparing them to PDAs or Palm Pilots.)
Another disadvantage for netbooks is their lack of processing power and memory. These ultra-portable computers are not designed for gaming or other demanding applications.
Finally, many netbooks do not come with a CD or DVD drive. Installing applications will require some other form of input, and watching movies from a DVD is out of the question. - After considering the pros and cons of buying a netbook, you’ll probably realize that netbooks are great for certain purposes but have limitations.
If you’re looking for something portable to compliment your main computer, consider a netbook. Also, a netbook is a great replacement for a PDA or a cheap computer for a kid.
However, if your looking for a powerful computer with a large hard drive and a processor that can handle demanding applications and games, you should probably look for a full-size laptop or a desktop.
Tips & Warnings
- If you are also looking for mobile broadband service so you can surf the internet and send email from anywhere with cell service, consider a netbook with a built-in broaband card or AirCard. An Acer Aspire netbook can be bought for as little as $79 at Radio Shack if you’re willing to sign up for a monthly service plan through AT&T.
- Shop around and look for the best deals. Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and most of the online computer stores sell Lenova, HP, and Acer netbooks along with a few other brands.
