Netbook Compare – How to Pick the Right Netbook at the Store

When you arrive at any electronics store like Best Buy or Microcenter, you’ll probably see, between the shelves of larger PCs, a table full of little netbooks. They do, admittedly, look very similar, but you have to be on guard or you might purchase an under-performing netbook, which can be a real drag if you own one.

Instructions
  1. Rather than looking at a netbook’s shiny shell and making you decision based on that, make an informed decision based on what is under the hood. Most electronic stores like Best Buy have an accompanying card detailing the specs of the machine. Please look there before anywhere else.
  2. The first thing you should look for is RAM (Random Access Memory). Most netbooks come with 1 GB, a few with 2 GB, and shamefully a few with 512 MB. Always try to get a higher number and never buy a netbook with under 1 GB of RAM (i.e. 512 MB).
  3. Also, look at the processor. Most netbooks are equipped with Intel Atom processors. However, not every Atom is the same. Always try to buy an N-Series Intel Atom and take a pass on the older Z-Series Intel Atom (unless you are looking for power savings). AMD also provides processors to netbooks. However, try to scope out a N-Series processor for maximum benefit.
  4. Most netbooks, now at least, have 120-160 GB Hard Drives. At this point in the game, don’t settle for anything less. Some netbooks still carry SSD (Solid State Drives). Avoid those because of their small size.
  5. Finally, get an operating system that works for you. There are many options out there because of the different Linux distributions. But there are also many Windows options as well. Among these choices are Linpus, Ubuntu, Xandros, Andriod, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. All have their pros and cons. The standard however is Windows XP.

Tips & Warnings

  • Find a comfortable keyboard as well. That, besides screen size, will influence your decision the most.
  • The most solid netbooks on the market are the Acer Aspire One and Asus Eee. IMHO.
